He was a medical technician and went to the aid of 20 wounded men, succeeding in carrying three of them inside the aid station building. The building was under heavy enemy fire. Tec/4 Fettig, wo could speak German fluently, , followed by another aide emerged from the building asking the enemy to spare the wounded, and calling to them to cease fire; however, they were cut down with maching gun fire and grenades. He was also awarded the PUrple Heart and Bronze Star.
